3 life lessons plants taught me

My late grandmother and I shared a love for plants. I inherited many from her throughout the years and again after she passed.

The first lesson I learned from her and plants was deadheading. Deadheading leaves doesn’t just make the plant prettier, but it allows the plants’ energy to flow towards the healthy leaves instead of wasting it. What if we deadheaded our lives? If we ask God to reveal his purposeful goals and dreams, we could stop focusing on the noise and busyness of life. This revision allows our energy to flow to the right things that help us flourish.

Pruning might sound exactly like deadheading but is removing outgrowth for structural integrity and health. I have a Norfolk Pine named Charlie, who was rescued from overwatering. I had to cut one of the two woody trunks, leaving it looking very Charlie Brown Christmas tree. I apologized to Charlie but assured him it is for his own good. I wonder if God might whisper the same things to us as he refines us.

Lastly, we need each other just like fiddle leaf trees. They thrive with a mate just like we do with healthy friendships—companions matter.

What would you add to this list?

I am a plant lady of 49+ plants, and I still don’t always get it right, but it’s fun trying.

Always learning,
until next month lovelies.
